Hancock Park is a beautiful historic neighborhood which was developed in the 1920s and the 1930s. The official neighborhood stretches from Melrose Avenue on the north to Wilshire Boulevard on the south and from Highland Avenue east to Rossmore Avenue.
The surrounding neighborhoods of Larchmont Village, Windsor Square, Windsor Village and Fremont Place will also refer to themselves as being in Hancock Park, even though they lie outside the boundaries.
Outstanding architects of the era designed the palatial two-story, single family Hancock Park homes in various Period Revival styles (including Tudor, English, Spanish Colonial, Mediterranean, Monterey and American Colonial) for influential members of Los Angeles society. The vast majority of the Hancock Park homes are set back 50 feet from the street, as insisted upon by G. Allan Hancock, and include side driveways generally leading though a porte cochere to a rear garage. Past prominent Hancock Park home owners have included millionaire Howard Hughes, entertainers Mae West and Nat King Cole, Broadway Department Store magnate Arthur Letts, Jr., and architect William Pereira.
Hancock Park homes still retain reflections of this era in the original floor plans with maids rooms, pantries, elevators, back staircases, guest quarters and sometimes a ballroom or bar. All of this was necessary in order to accommodate the demands, and lifestyles of its affluent residents.
But there was a time when the neighborhood fell out of favor and some homes fell into disrepair and could be had for a song. Not any more…most Hancock Park homes have been renovated and updated with a strong guidance from the Historic Preservation Overlay Zone (HPOZ) that keeps the neighborhood in the style to which it is accustomed. Although there are still some fixers that hit the market now and again and represent a chance for new home owners to restore some American history, Hancock Park homes are an architectural jewel in the crown of Los Angeles and remain much in demand.
Hancock Park homes have long been sought after by many who work within Hollywood, most probably due to its close proximity to a handful of major television and film studios, notably Paramount Pictures. Hancock Park is also a desirable location for those that must commute downtown or to other main areas in Los Angeles County.

The lifestyle in Hancock Park is benefited by the quaint shopping and dining in Larchmont Village where al fresco dining reigns supreme. Restaurants range from California cuisine to authentic New York pizza – from sushi to Italian and from artfully constructed deli sandwiches to melt in your mouth cupcakes.
Plus, our local Farmers Market held every Sunday morning is an absolute local favorite and has a healthy range of organic produce.
The Wilshire Country Club, founded in 1919, was designed by Norman Macbeth as a links golf course with a natural stream running through, giving the course its unmistakable character and challenge. Wilshire has hosted many great tournaments and groups such as the LA Open, the Senior PGA and the LPGA. The course remains one of Southern California’s golf gems.
The Los Angeles Tennis Club, founded in 1920, became the home courts for California’s tennis greats. The Golden Age of Tennis and Hollywood converged here where legends Bill Tilden, Fred Perry, Jack Kramer, Rod Laver, Stan Smith, Pancho Gonzales, Arthur Ashe, Donald Budge, Billie Jean King, Jimmy Connors, John McEnroe and more were crowned champion of the Pacific Southwest Tournament. Today, the LATC and its 16 courts remain a vibrant center of tennis with a pool, fitness facilities, bar and restaurant adding to the mix.
Investing in a Hancock Park home will afford you the opportunity of becoming a part of a neighborhood rich in history, character, and diversity, as well as a place that believes in a strong sense of community.
